Victorian Department of Transport Alcohol and Driving Survey

Information about the survey

Thank you for your interest in this survey about alcohol and driving conducted by Wallis Social Research on behalf of the Department of Transport.

  • Your participation is voluntary and greatly valued

  • Completing the survey allows you to enter a prize draw for $1,000 in the form of an eGiftCard or direct bank transfer.

  • Only the person contacted to complete the survey should complete the survey (the selection of people to participate is designed to reflect the Victorian population)

  • The survey is only available online

  • The survey takes around 12 minutes to complete.

Why should I do this survey?

The results of this survey will help the Victorian Department of Transport (DoT) gain insights into Victorians’ behaviour and experience on our roads, as well as their intentions regarding regulation of drinking and driving. Taking part places your experience and voice on the table when policies are discussed.

Does the survey ask sensitive questions?

The survey does ask about drinking alcohol and driving behaviours which may be illegal. At these questions you have an option not to respond. However, please note that the survey is confidential and anonymous.

We understand that many Victorians have experienced upsetting and traumatic events on our roads. If responding to the survey causes you any distress, there are a range of helpline numbers to call which can provide you with assistance. You may also contact us (1800 113 444 from 9:00AM to 8:00PM AEDT weekdays).

The support services provided in the survey are:

  • LifeLine (13 11 14)

  • BeyondBlue (1300 22 4636)

  • Amber Community in Victoria (1300 367 797).

Where did you get my contact details from?

Your contact details were provided to Wallis by the Department of Transport for the sole purpose of contacting you to take part in this survey. Note that this information does not include government identifiers such as licence or vehicle registration numbers.

How were you selected?

Victorians who hold, or have held, a licence or learners’ permit or registered a vehicle were randomly selected from eligible VicRoads’ records to take part.

Is the survey confidential?

The survey is confidential, and your answers will not be linked to identifiable information. This means that your responses to the survey cannot have any effect on your driving record. It also means that if any of the information we have is not correct we cannot update your VicRoads information. You will need to contact VicRoads directly (for instance you have changed your name or your contact details have changed).

Wallis Social Research is conducting the survey and any personally identifiable information you give us will remain confidential and will be de-identified before the results are reported to the Department of Transport.

Results are reported in aggregate and not at an individual level. Responses to the survey are separated from the personal information used to contact people.

Your personal information will not be used for any purpose other than contacting you to take part in this survey unless you give us permission to do otherwise. Other uses may include:

  • recontacting you for other surveys for the Department of Transport if you provide permission when asked at the end of the survey

  • contacting you if you are a prize winner

  • if you ask us to provide your details to the Department of Transport while dealing with a query (note, we cannot update contact details, you will need to contact VicRoads directly in that instance)
