CLOSED: Young Men’s Attitudes and Behaviours Study

Jesuit Social Services’- The Men’s Project team (supported by Respect Victoria)

Wallis, in partnership with the Jesuit Social Services’ - The Men’s Project team (supported by Respect Victoria), is conducting research on young men’s attitudes and behaviours in Australia. This study is an extension and further iteration on The Man Box study (2018), which has been run on separate occasions internationally since 2018.

This research aims to explore young men’s attitudes and behaviours on a variety of issues in society, particularly gender norms, physical appearance, physical and mental health, relationships, caring for children, housework, sexuality, and violence.

The resultant research outputs will allow Jesuit Social Services to refine their support services for men, and the people in their lives to a better and safer outcome.

Wallis’ role in the quantitative research component of this project is to test the quantitative survey among young men, program the survey, and analyse the results to support Jesuit Social Services’ comprehensive analytical report that builds on the previous reports, The Man Box and Unpacking The Man Box. Additionally, Wallis will be conducting the driver analyses for the report which aim to draw linkages that have not yet been established between certain harmful attitudes and behaviours. The fieldwork for this arm of research will be finalised at the end of June 2023, with Wallis’ report to come in July, 2023.

To add much needed colour and depth of understanding to the quantitative research, Wallis will also be conducting focus groups and in-depth interviews with groups of young men across Australia. The qualitative research will explore the deeper narratives, uncover the driving forces by which young men form their attitudes and behavioural tendencies. The qualitative research will follow the quantitative research, with the fieldwork being conducted between July and August of 2023.

Wallis aims to finalise their reporting of this project by late August in 2023.
